Biography

William Andrés Trevathan, an Episcopal priest, was arrested on May 19, 1979 during a protest against U.S. Navy operations at Bahía de la Chiva on Vieques, Puerto Rico. A federal court convicted the protesters of unauthorized entry onto military property. On May 19, 1981, the First Circuit reversed the convictions of Parrilla Bonilla, Berkan, Tió and Trevathan because the prosecution had not established the required notice that their presence was prohibited. The appellate ruling establishes the arrest and prosecution; the individual period of physical confinement remains unverified.
