Biography
Wilfredo Vélez Hernández was imprisoned for a 1979 civil-disobedience action against U.S. Navy operations in Vieques. A first-person memoir in Biekesí describes a four-month sentence, imprisonment at Oso Blanco, transfer to Kennedy Youth Center in West Virginia, a hunger strike and a further transfer to Lexington. The January–February 1980 New Movement bulletin corroborates imprisonment among the Vieques resisters.
National Catholic Reporter’s June 18, 1999 report, quoting his wife, Eunice Santana, also describes four months of imprisonment. The sources support the four-month term, but do not establish precise sentencing, admission or release dates.
