Biography
Wilfredo Toledo, known as Freddie, was a photojournalist detained while covering a May 13, 2000 protest on Navy land in Vieques. El Nuevo Día’s contemporary account describes detention in a holding cell and at Roosevelt Roads. A later first-person photography retrospective in Claridad identifies Wilfredo and the Freddie nickname as the same photographer.
The reporting documents historical detention connected to coverage of the Vieques protest. An individual conviction, prison sentence or precise release date has not been established. Reports of mistreatment were disputed by the Navy and are not presented as adjudicated findings.
