Biography

Walter Byers was a member of the Unemployment Council of Holland, Ohio arrested on the picket line at Bingham's after joining at the strikers' request. The May 8, 1934 Daily Worker names him with the other defendant, describes a May Day demonstration to the county jail, and expressly reports both released on May 3 following mass pressure. They were held in solitary confinement for almost the whole week of their detention and denied visits by wives and children. The source does not establish an exact initial arrest day, conviction, judicial sentence or precisely measured custody total. The Toledo report corroborates actual release May 3 after the May Day jail march, and describes almost the whole week of detention spent in solitary, denial of family visits and little food. The approximate interval is not converted into an exact seven-day completed total.
