Biography

Marshall's account of Walter S. Hawkes names Dr. W. E. Smith among the men already under arrest at the Tamaroa, Illinois railroad depot when Hawkes was brought there on August 22, 1862. The group was placed on a guarded train under Major Board. The subsequent account describes Hawkes's confinement in Washington, but does not independently establish this companion's exact admission or release dates or charge. Source: John A.
