Biography
Ruby Bates’s December 1933 first-person memoir describes Victoria Price and herself being taken through a crowd into Scottsboro jail after the initial train seizure in the 1931 prosecution. After a medical examination, Bates says both women were locked in a cell and remained there until going before the grand jury, afterward being taken to the run-around where the white boys were held. Bates describes sleeping on a three-inch mattress on concrete. This documents actual witness restraint of Price, an accuser in the case, without endorsing her accusation or treating her as one of the nine Black defendants. No individual charge, imposed term, exact discharge or completed duration is printed. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/labordefender/1933/v09n11-dec-1933-lab-def.pdf#page=19
