Biography

Victor Campos was a Gallup, New Mexico resident jailed during resistance to evictions in the miners' neighborhood of Chihuahuita in 1935. After deputies removed his household's furniture and boarded the house, neighbors reopened it and returned the belongings. Campos was arrested on a breaking-and-entering accusation before his April 4 court hearing. He requested an adjournment so the International Labor Defense could obtain a lawyer. The confrontation outside the hearing ended in gunfire that killed Sheriff M. R. Carmichael and two demonstrators. Campos escaped custody during the April 4 encounter and had not been recaptured when the murder trial concluded in October. He was a defendant in the eviction proceedings; the ten men tried for the sheriff's murder were a different group.

The April 20, 1935 Daily Worker named Victor Campos among the Gallup defendants facing first-degree murder proceedings in Santa Fe after the early-April confrontation at the courthouse. The April 19 report described a preliminary hearing, with forty-five defendants appearing and three unavailable through wounds or illness. The report establishes charges and hearing participation, but does not individually establish continued physical detention for every person in its roster. No complete term or exact arrest date is established. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1935/v12-n095-NAT-apr-20-1935-DW-Q.pdf#page=1

Page 8 identifies him with the other of Exiquio Navarro and Victor Campos as the two eviction-proceeding defendants who escaped in the April 4 Gallup confrontation and had not been recaptured when this report was written. Exiquio is the printed variant of the existing Esiquio record. The source separately says the sheriff and two demonstrators were killed; the escaped defendants are not mistakenly treated as those two deaths. No later recapture or final discharge is established.
