Biography

Vasa Popovich was one of the foreign-born workers identified as jailed pending deportation in an International Labor Defense statement dated December 8, 1931 and printed in the December 11 Daily Worker. Authorities sought deportation to Yugoslavia, and cash bail was $1,000. The statement called for funds to free the prisoners and placed the detention in the campaign against union activists. It gives no exact custody endpoints or evidence of an executed deportation. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1931/v08-n297-NY-dec-11-1931-DW-LOC.pdf#page=3
