Biography
Toni Flynn crossed the line at Fort Benning, Georgia during the September 2002 SOA Watch vigil to close the U.S. Army School of the Americas / WHINSEC. Sentenced to 6 months in federal custody.
Each year on the November anniversary of the assassination of six Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her daughter at the University of Central America in San Salvador in 1989, peace activists gather at the gates of Fort Benning, Georgia, site of the U.S. Army School of the Americas / Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), to commemorate the dead and to call for the school's closure. Hundreds have crossed the line onto the base over four decades of vigils; many have served federal sentences ranging from 30 days to a year for trespass.
Crisp County jail caption and year distinction
The August 2017 Catholic Agitator photograph caption individually names Toni Flynn and Father Jerry Zawada as longtime friends who both served six-month terms at the same time in Crisp County Jail, Georgia, for the 2001 Fort Benning line-crossing. This corroborates actual prison service but does not print exact admission or discharge days. The 2001 action year is not a claim that the whole sentence was served during 2001. The existing record has a November 2001 arrest and a 2002–2003 custody interval; neither endpoint is overwritten or an additional duplicate episode created from the caption. The legacy description’s September 2002 action label remains a separately flagged reconciliation issue rather than being treated as another incarceration.
