Biography

Tommy Gray was an Alabama sharecropper and brother of Ralph Gray, killed during the Camp Hill repression. The September 11, 1931 Chattanooga dispatch published September 12 reports Tommy released after nearly two months actually in jail. His first-person letter says Ranzie Brown struck him on the head at his Friday-night intake and threatened to kill him like his brother; these are Gray’s allegations. He said he remained committed to the movement despite denial of access to food. Exact arrest and physical-release days are unestablished. Nearly two months is approximate actual custody, not an exact two-month or sixty-day total.
