Biography

Tom Hardy was a member of the International Seamen’s Union imprisoned at Maine State Prison in Thomaston after the 1921 seamen’s strike in Portland, Maine. He was among five union members named in prison correspondence as serving manslaughter sentences following a fatal confrontation aboard a schooner staffed by strikebreakers. Fellow prisoners appealed for support for the men, saying their union had largely neglected them.
