Biography

Tom Cahill was a Vietnam-era peace activist and later a leader of the movement against sexual abuse in detention. In a 2001 interview he described antiwar activism in San Antonio and imprisonment for civil disobedience in 1968. Just Detention International also dates his San Antonio jail experience to 1968 and documents the sexual assault he survived there. The National Prison Rape Elimination Commission report instead describes civil-disobedience detention during a factory labor strike in 1967. These conflicting accounts are preserved without inventing an exact arrest date or treating them as two independently established cases. He subsequently lived outside custody and served as president of Just Detention International from 1998 to 2006. The organization commemorated his death in 2021.

Case

Charges: Civil-disobedience arrest in San Antonio; precise statutory charge and disposition unverified
Sentence: Historical jail detention connected to civil disobedience. Cahill linked it to Vietnam-era peace activism in his 2001 interview; JDI identifies 1968, while the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission report gives 1967 and a factory labor strike. Exact custody dates, conviction, imposed sentence and total time served are not established. Accounts of an assault lasting approximately 24 hours do not establish total detention duration. His later public advocacy establishes that this was a completed historical detention.
