Biography

Thomas Torigian was a Daily Worker seller in Lynn, Massachusetts. The Daily Worker of August 31, 1933, page 2, in a dispatch dated August 30, reports that police ordered him to move while selling the paper, attacked and arrested him after he refused, and beat him in a police wagon. It says he was jailed on charges of assaulting an officer and refusing to move, and announced a court appearance for the following day with International Labor Defense representation. Editor C. A. Hathaway wired a protest and demanded his release. No trial outcome, sentence or release date is established.

The October 30, 1933 Daily Worker, page 5, carries an October 22 Boston report identifying Tom Torigian as a Daily Worker seller arrested and beaten in Lynn. It says Judge Hayden found him guilty and fined him $45, and reports an International Labor Defense protest demanding withdrawal of the charges and fine and action against Officer Broadbine. The report gives no arrest, verdict or physical release day. It does not establish whether this was the same arrest reported on August 30 or a later prosecution.
