Biography

Thomas Shipp was a young Black prisoner lynched at Marion, Indiana on August 7, 1930. The September 2 Daily Worker reports an ILD investigation alleging Sheriff Jacob Campbell led the mob to the jail cells and that the cells were left unlocked. Smith and Shipp resisted the mob. The allegations of Klan and official complicity are attributed to that contemporary investigation; predictions about the grand jury are not an established outcome.
