Biography

Page 1’s May 10 Santa Fe roster identifies Teresa Avitia as a Women’s Auxiliary member held on $500 bail for aiding a prisoner to escape in the Gallup proceedings. It says she was almost totally blind and had nevertheless helped lead fighters for working-class unity. The roster distinguishes four escape defendants from ten murder defendants. No relationship to Manuel Avitia is inferred from the shared surname. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1935/v12-n113-NAT-may-11-1935-DW-Q.pdf

Page 8 individually lists this defendant among four others facing the charge of aiding and abetting a prisoner’s escape after seven murder defendants were acquitted but remanded on that separate accusation. This corroborates the existing distinct escape-charge cohort. The $2,000 bond in this paragraph is explicitly assigned to the seven remanded men, not individually to these four; their existing earlier bail figures are not overwritten. No verdict, physical release or duration for this individual is reported. Source: https://newspapers.swco.ttu.edu/bitstreams/34268242-ac0d-472e-8d03-7eb5b704a2c0/download
