US Marine lance corporal who declared conscientious objection during the 1990-1991 Gulf War mobilization and refused deployment. Court-martialed for desertion / missing movement and imprisoned in military custody; his case was supported by Gulf War-era anti-war and political prisoner organizing. The February 1, 1991 Workers’ Advocate describes Jones as a twenty-one-year-old Black Marine reservist who publicly opposed the Gulf War on December 13, arguing that poverty, racism and oppression funneled Black youth into the armed forces. This is a contemporary account of his stated opposition, not a December 13 arrest or a birth-date calculation.
