Sue Leon Africa
Biography
Suzanne LeVino, known within MOVE as Sue Leon Africa, Sue Savino Africa and Ria, was imprisoned after the confrontation between Philadelphia police and MOVE at the organization’s Powelton Village home. She was convicted on charges arising from the 1977 police siege, received a term of six to twelve years, entered state custody in 1980 and was released in 1992 after serving the full twelve years. She was incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution at Muncy under prisoner number 006325.
MOVE’s retrospective account identifies Sue as the mother of Tomaso, born at the North 33rd Street headquarters August 4, 1975, later killed in the May 13, 1985 bombing. It dates her arrest during the police watch to June 12, 1977 and explicitly reports release with Robert, Conrad and Jerry on May 8, 1978. It separately names Sue among the nine Rochester arrestees on May 13, 1981 who were extradited to Philadelphia. The account reports twelve years served and release in 1992 after refusal of a parole condition against associating with MOVE, and alleges solitary punishment for refusal of blood tests. In February 1996 Sue, Ramona and Carlos undertook a European speaking tour.
