Biography
A University of Iowa student who burned his draft card on October 20, 1965, at the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City, one of the earliest prosecutions under the 1965 law. He was convicted on February 3, 1966 and sentenced to three years' probation.

The Daily Iowan of February 4, 1966 identifies him by his full name, Stephen Lynn Smith, and reports his conviction the previous day in federal court at Des Moines before Judge Roy Stephenson. Its account says Smith remained free on bond and that sentencing would be scheduled after a presentence investigation. A separate count alleging failure to possess his draft card was dismissed because the indictment did not allege a willful failure. The report does not establish a period of incarceration. Its photograph, credited to Mike Toner, individually identifies Smith burning his registration card during the October 20, 1965 Soapbox Soundoff at the Iowa Memorial Union.
