Biography

Black Bessemer militant Sol Williams was kidnapped from his bed on January 29, 1935 by men described in the newspaper as Tennessee Coal and Iron company thugs led by Jack Brown. They carried him eighty miles, stripped and whipped him; he escaped into woods while they planned to kill him. He took five days to reach Montgomery for medical attention and had returned to Bessemer by the February 12 dispatch. The five-day journey is not established as five days of continuous detention. This is an attributed extrajudicial abduction, with final detention duration unknown.
