Biography
Smiley Chatok was a striker in the 1937 Youngstown, Ohio Little Steel strike. Authorities arrested him during the mass roundup on June 22 and held him for exactly forty hours because he carried a small pocketknife he had owned for twelve years. A contemporary account reported that he received only bread and coffee in custody.
