Biography
Shorty Stevenson was a Steel Workers' Organizing Committee leader arrested with roughly 200 strikers on June 22, 1937 in the Youngstown, Ohio Little Steel strike. He was jailed for allegedly carrying a gun he 'had never seen until the sheriff offered it in evidence' and released on $5,000 bail.
William B. Smith’s July 13, 1937 New Masses report places Stevenson in the June 22 Youngstown roundup and explicitly reports his eventual release on $5,000 bail. The writer says the gun allegedly carried by Stevenson was unfamiliar to him until the sheriff produced it. This is a contemporary allegation and release-on-bail report, not evidence of a conviction or a precise discharge day.
