Biography

Seymour Eichel, son of Julius and Esther Eichel, opposed military service and refused draft registration. The Swarthmore College Peace Collection family archive records his June 1956 FBI arrest, July indictment and December 27, 1956 sentence of a year and a day. He was held at the West Street House of Detention before transfer to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, and undertook a hunger strike at West Street. The archive reports release after nine months and eighteen days, distinct from the imposed sentence. It records his birth in Brooklyn on June 14, 1930 and death on October 13, 2013.
