Biography

Seth Luther was a skilled worker and labor reform speaker who agitated for expanded political rights and working-class reforms in Providence and beyond during the early 1840s. His activism became entangled with the Dorr Rebellion-era struggle over suffrage in Rhode Island: he was captured and imprisoned for his role in that upheaval, and accounts describe an attempted escape involving setting fire to bedding before his eventual release in 1843. Luther’s later life included further clashes with authorities amid worsening instability—he was arrested again after a delusional episode linked to an attempted bank robbery—and he ultimately died at an asylum in Brattleboro.
