Biography
Scott Daniel Warren is a geographer and humanitarian aid volunteer with No More Deaths / No Más Muertes, a Tucson-based organization that has placed water and medical supplies in the Sonoran Desert since 2004 to reduce migrant deaths along the U.S.–Mexico border. In January 2018, hours after No More Deaths released video footage showing U.S. Border Patrol agents systematically destroying jugs of water left for migrants, Border Patrol arrested Warren at a humanitarian aid station in Ajo, Arizona where two migrants were receiving food and water. He was charged with two felony counts of harboring and one of conspiracy; he faced up to 20 years in federal prison.
His first trial in June 2019 ended with the jury split 8–4 for acquittal; the government retried him on the harboring counts in November 2019, and a unanimous jury acquitted him on November 20, 2019. His prosecution was widely covered as an attempt to criminalize humanitarian aid in the borderlands. He continues to organize and write about Sonoran Desert migrant deaths.
The November 2019 reproduced report describes the June hung jury, eight votes for acquittal and four for conviction, the government’s July decision to drop conspiracy, and the scheduled November 12 retrial on harboring charges. Its January 18 arrest wording conflicts with the January 17 arrest and January 18 release already held here, so it does not replace those dates. Initial detention review October 13, 2026: Tina Vasquez's contemporaneous Rewire report, updated January 22, 2018 explicitly reports that Warren appeared in court January 18 and was released on his own recognizance. January 18, 2018 is recorded as this detention's release, separate from the November 2019 acquittal. The Tucson federal courthouse trial venue is removed from the prison field; a detention facility and exact admission are not established by that venue or inferred from the arrest. No exact custody total is asserted.
