Biography

Saul Bernard Manfield was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, on July 9, 1961, for participating in the Freedom Rides and challenging segregation in interstate transportation — one of the arrests recorded by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission and preserved in the Civil Rights Digital Library. The catalog establishes the arrest, the participation, and the individually identified police photograph, but not the court disposition, any transfer to Parchman, or the physical release date; those fields are unresolved pending county-jail, court, or penitentiary records.

The original July 9, 1961 Jackson police offense report names Saul Bernard Manfield among the arrested Freedom Riders and identifies the charge as breach of the peace. The supplementary interview describes his work at Chicago’s Zenith Radio and T.V. plant and his travel via Nashville and Montgomery. His planned three-month work leave and willingness to remain in jail are not actual custody totals. No sentence, conviction or release date is inferred from another rider’s attached record.
