Biography
Sanyika Shakur, born Kody Dejohn Scott on November 13, 1963, was an author and former Los Angeles gang member. He adopted New Afrikan politics while imprisoned and wrote Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member in prison. His documented confinement arose from robbery, assault, weapons and other criminal cases rather than prosecution for political activity. A Riverside County court imposed a seven-year term in June 1991, and later reporting says he spent years at San Quentin and Pelican Bay. He received another six-year term after a 2008 no-contest plea and was released in August 2012; exact admission and release days for these periods have not been located. He died in Oceanside, California, on June 6, 2021.
