Biography

Samuel Yudkin owned a Bethesda bookstore. Police arrested him after officers bought Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer there on October 26, 1961. A jury convicted Yudkin and imposed six months in jail; Maryland’s highest court reversed because the trial judge had excluded evidence about literary merit and community standards.
