Biography
Samuel Ely was a leader of resistance to Massachusetts courts and state policies in 1782, before Shays’ Rebellion. He was sentenced to six months and confined in Springfield; supporters broke him out. His interrupted custody must not be counted as six months actually served. Later confinement episodes require separate dating.
