Biography

Page 2 identifies Sam Elmstead, a Local 203 striker, Alaska resident since 1916 and father of two. On June 24, carrying his three-year-old child, he was clubbed from behind near the union hall, then again near the mine office by vigilante Percy Reynolds. He testified to a skull fracture, about two weeks in hospital and a $59.50 bill. The account explicitly says prosecutor Holzheiner and assistant Folta took him from jail after hospital release to urge him not to testify for fellow workers; he refused. It establishes political confinement but supplies no individual charge or complete interval. Source: https://archive.ilwu.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/19351219.pdf
