Biography

Sam Bennett was a Black sharecropper held in Illinois for extradition to Arkansas. The August 20, 1936 Chicago report describes a petition signed by over a thousand residents, prepared by the Workers’ Rights League, asking Governor Horner for unconditional release. The defense said return would expose him to plantation-owner persecution or death and framed the case as a right-to-organize issue. These are attributed defense claims; no exact arrest day, underlying statutory charge, actual extradition or physical release is reported. A photograph shows a supporter carrying a Bennett placard, not an identified portrait of Bennett.
