Biography
Salvador Tió, a lawyer, was arrested on May 19, 1979 during a protest against U.S. Navy operations at Bahía de la Chiva on Vieques, Puerto Rico. A federal court convicted the protesters of unauthorized entry onto military property. On May 19, 1981, the First Circuit reversed the convictions of Parrilla Bonilla, Berkan, Tió and Trevathan because the prosecution had not established the required notice that their presence was prohibited. The appellate ruling establishes the arrest and prosecution; the individual period of physical confinement remains unverified.
A University of Puerto Rico author biography identifies Salvador Tió Fernández as born in 1946. His New York legal-services directorship matches his own congressional testimony identifying the May 19, 1979 Vieques arrest. The biography supplies no birth month or day. Revista Cayey 93, printed page 62; Congressional testimony, printed page 135.
