Biography

S. T. Stargell was a Black worker held in Jefferson County jail for investigation of the fire that killed his former employer Arthur Rich and three family members. The May 23, 1935 Daily Worker describes him surrendering to the Birmingham sheriffs office after learning he was wanted. He had left Richs farm on May 11 after about three months working for food and old clothes; the fire occurred the following Tuesday. The paper disputes the arson accusation and describes hostile police-backed stories, framing the detention as racial and labor retaliation. That assessment is attributed to the newspaper rather than treated as a judicial finding. Exact arrest and release dates and eventual disposition are unestablished.
