Biography

S. H. Dalrymple was international president of the United Rubber Workers. The Gadsden report states that he was in Sheriff R. A. Leath’s custody when company-associated men beat him about two weeks before the June 20 union mass meeting. The sheriff characterized the assault as a street brawl; the newspaper disputed that explanation. This explicit custody statement supports recording the episode, without assuming a criminal charge, precise arrest day or measured duration. Daily Worker, June 23, 1936, page 3. The NLRB report identifies union president Sherman H. Dalrymple as the victim of the June 6 Gadsden assault by Goodyear-associated personnel. It says he was beaten about the head, face and body and forced out in serious condition without medical treatment. The report distinguishes the Board’s allegations from a completed court judgment and supplements the existing account of his custody by Sheriff Leath; the assault date alone is not an exact arrest or release date. The page 8 editorial repeats the Board’s accusation.
