Biography

Ronia Curese was a Black worker in Eufaula, Alabama. According to a worker's letter to the International Labor Defense, reported in the Daily Worker of August 10, 1933, page 2, a police officer beat Curese's wife after she refused his advances. When Curese objected on August 1, police arrested him, took him to the courthouse, handcuffed him, beat him with a chair and shot him twice. The report says he died August 2 and that no action had been taken against the officer. This contemporary account establishes an arrest and a fatal assault while restrained, but does not identify a formal charge, judicial sentence, or whether he remained in custody until his death.
