Biography

Hampton and Elizabeth City County, Virginia civilian held by Confederate authorities on suspicion of supplying maps and information to Union forces. Commissioner James Lyons’s April 26, 1862 examination records his denial, uncompleted appointment as surveyor of the port of Hampton, and participation in a jail escape. Wood separately described earlier Union arrest and parole at Fortress Monroe in June 1861; he refused an allegiance oath and was discharged on parole. These are two distinct episodes, not a continuous term; exact arrest and release days and the particular Confederate jail are unspecified. The examiner recorded his age as thirty.
