Biography

Marshall identifies Newman as principal of Harford Academy near Baltimore. He reports arrest at Belair in late June 1863, confinement in the county jail and Havre de Grace guardhouse, and transfer to the Gilmor House military headquarters in Baltimore. Newman was released in late July after about a month; the account says no charge was preferred and describes damage to his academy property during the detention. Source: John A.
