Biography

Robert Hart, a Letcher County deputy sheriff and UMWA member, entered Lynch on January 6, 1935 to serve a murder warrant during a union meeting. Harlan deputies arrested and disarmed him, held him several hours, and released him after smashing his gun. The Senate report attributes the attack apparently to his union membership. The murder warrant was one he was serving, not a charge against Hart. U.S. Senate, Violations of Free Speech and Rights of Labor, Senate Report No. 6, 76th Congress, 1st session (1939), part 2, printed 51, PDF 281.
