Biography

Richard Dean Bucklin was a U.S. Army war resister who left his unit in Germany and lived in Sweden before returning to face military prosecution. Contemporary amnesty reports document his imprisonment at Fort Leavenworth.

Case

Charges: Two counts of absence without leave following opposition to the Vietnam War
Sentenced: January 1974
Sentence: Sentenced in January1974 to fifteen months at hard labor, reduction in grade, forfeitures and a bad conduct discharge. VVAW dates sentencing January8; another contemporary report gives January9 for conviction, so the exact day is left unresolved. Catholic Peace Fellowship and a later VVAW report confirm actual imprisonment, the latter at Fort Leavenworth. Actual duration, admission and release dates are unknown. Earlier returns to military authority and periods of leave are not presumed continuous confinement.
