Biography

Rev. James L. Mengel III was a United Church of Christ minister and Air Force veteran who joined the Baltimore Four in protesting the Vietnam War at the Baltimore Customs House on October 27, 1967. Mengel helped plan the action, contributed blood, signed its public statement, and distributed Bibles while Philip Berrigan, Thomas Lewis, and David Eberhardt poured blood over Selective Service files. A jury convicted Mengel as an aider and abettor. He ultimately received a one-year suspended sentence and three years of probation and did not serve a jail or prison sentence for the action.
