Biography
Reies Lopez Tijerina was a Chicano land-grant activist who founded La Alianza Federal de Mercedes Libres to recover Spanish and Mexican land grants in New Mexico. On June 5, 1967 he led the armed raid on the Rio Arriba County courthouse at Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico, intended to free arrested Alianza members and make a citizen's arrest of the district attorney. He served two years in federal prison and one to three years in New Mexico state custody for the courthouse raid.
El Gallo reports revocation of Tijerina’s bond and a transfer to La Tuna. It reproduces an affidavit concerning an alleged June 8 attempt on his life; the affidavit’s June 11 date is not independently proof of the date he physically entered prison. La Raza’s July 1969 reprint from El Grito del Norte describes the June 16–17, 1969 federal bond-revocation hearing in Albuquerque before Judge Howard Bratton, with U.S. Attorney Victor Ortega prosecuting and William Kunstler representing Tijerina. The report says Bratton permanently revoked bond and sent Tijerina back to jail. Its text gives June 10 for the preceding revocation and jailing, while another passage describes three days after June 8. This internal date inconsistency is preserved: neither passage is used to replace the separately entered June 11 institutional-admission field or calculate a new custody duration. Accounts of the armed confrontation, mistreatment and attempted assassination remain allegations attributed to the reporting and testimony.
