Biography

Raymond Lewis was a San Francisco Black Panther who served as managing editor of the party newspaper and deputy minister of information. Police arrested him with other Panthers in November 1968. In 1970 he described a separate police beating and his transfer from Central Station to San Francisco City Prison, where he was booked on kidnapping, weapons and resisting-arrest allegations.

In a first-person account signed June 27, 1970, Lewis described the police assault and arrest on June 15, his booking at San Francisco City Prison and subsequent guarded hospitalization. He reported that the police guard was removed on June 26 at about 6:30 p.m.; the physician discharged him from the hospital the following morning. The custody release and later medical discharge are distinct. His description of about ten days is approximate; the source does not independently establish an exact prison-admission day.
