The report states that officers rearrested Rayfield Rene Johnson at about 1 a.m. on June 14, 1970 on burglary and a second rape accusation concerning an April 11 incident. Unable to post $20,000 bond, he remained in St. Louis City Jail and was later sent to the state hospital in Fulton for psychiatric evaluation. The article alleged police beatings requiring fourteen stitches. The reported ninety-nine-year exposure was not an imposed sentence, and evaluation was not a finding of insanity.
