Biography
Ray Metzler was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Indiana imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 20 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: agreed to noncombatant service in the QMC, but later changed his mind; "I believed as though I would rather face death than go ahead with what I had taken up"; sentenced to 20 years in prison; sent to Leavenworth on Sept. 9, 1918; part of Group 1 of C.O.s released in Jan. …
