Biography
Ralph Squire was listed among imprisoned draft and conscientious resisters in contemporary CCCO reports from 1969 and 1970.
The September 1, 1971 Sufferings roster places this prisoner at Morgantown Federal Youth Center, West Virginia and identifies affiliation with Morgantown Meeting, West Virginia. It explicitly says the expected release was cancelled; this is not a physical discharge. The roster confirms confinement at its reporting time without establishing an exact admission, transfer or release day, a new case, or a complete actual duration. The March 1, 1972 journal corrects its earlier report of a sit-in: Squire and Suzanne Williams were reimprisoned after an attempted visit to Joan Nicholson, with no sit-in planned or carried out. Horace Champney attributes the erroneous description to a bad telephone connection and says they persisted in what they believed a lawful, orderly visit. The Sufferings notice says Squire had since been released, without supplying the physical release day or complete duration of this later detention. After completing his nonregistration term and leaving Morgantown on September 18, 1971, Squire was detained again for violating release conditions by joining an early October nonviolent sit-in at Ashland prison. The protest opposed the suppression of the Alderson women’s strike and the treatment of Joan Nicholson. By the November report he was held at Boyd County Jail in Catlettsburg, Kentucky.
