Biography

Marshall identifies Hilbish as a Pennsylvania businessman and Democratic legislative nominee violently arrested in Middleburg on July 27, 1863. He was taken to Lewisburg and Harrisburg and accused of membership in the Knights of the Golden Circle, disrespect toward the President and discouraging enlistments. The narrative reports conditional release pending a further hearing, followed by discharge when no accuser appeared. Source: John A.
