Biography

Patrick Brennan was a thirty-four-year-old Wilkes-Barre labor organizer, a former ILGWU organizer and member of the Pennsylvania Security League. The report says he entered the United States in 1916, was arrested June 10, 1935, questioned and released without bail. On April 1, 1936 he received a deportation warrant alleging illegal presence after his 1926 return from Ireland. Rev. Herman F. Reissig protested on behalf of his American-born wife and three children. The article does not establish an executed deportation or an exact physical discharge day. A September 3, 1936 Wilkes-Barre follow-up reports the Labor Department had averted deportation to Ireland by directing Brennan to leave for Canada by October 1 with permission to re-enter legally and become eligible for citizenship. The American Civil Liberties Union conducted his defense. This is an announced administrative arrangement, not evidence that departure, re-entry or deportation actually occurred. This report says two American-born children, whereas the earlier August 26 report said three; the discrepancy is preserved without selecting a family count.
