Biography

Oswell Wright was a free African American of Corydon, Indiana. In the 1857 "Bell–Wright" or "Brandenburg" case he, with two white farmers, was arrested by Kentucky officials for helping the enslaved blacksmith Charles Woodford escape across the Ohio River. The two white men were broken out of jail by a relative; only Wright was brought to court, convicted, and sentenced to five years in the Kentucky Penitentiary. He returned to Corydon after his release and died in 1875.
