Elderly, blind, diabetic Black woman imprisoned in Wisconsin on perjury and welfare-fraud charges The Black Panther Vol. 17 no.15 (1977) calls a frame-up in retaliation for her testimony that she saw a white Milwaukee policeman shoot a 16-year-old Black youth (Jerry Brookshire) in the back in 1974; her home was firebombed twice.
In September 1977 Davis was confined at Taycheedah women’s prison and, according to her daughter Esther Green, could see only about three feet ahead. Green said Davis had already served an eighteen-month perjury sentence, reduced from ten years, and was then serving a separate twenty-two-month welfare-fraud sentence. Her family sought commutation before she lost her remaining sight.
