Biography

Nicholas was an enslaved man jailed in Sussex County, Virginia, during prosecutions following Nat Turner’s 1831 uprising. He was convicted on September 13 of alleged seditious words and threats and remanded to jail under a death sentence.

Nicholas was enslaved by Hannah Williamson. On September 13, 1831, he appeared in the custody of the Sussex County jailer alongside Solomon and Booker. He pleaded not guilty to allegations of seditious words and threats to rebel and aid violence against white people.

The prosecution relied on Beck’s account of conversations at a May gathering at Raccoon Meeting House. Other testimony questioned her earlier account. The court convicted Nicholas and ordered him returned to jail for an execution scheduled for September 23. The records reviewed do not confirm its date.
