Biography

Ned was an enslaved man held in the Sussex County jail during prosecutions following Nat Turner’s 1831 uprising in Virginia. He was convicted of alleged seditious speech and threats on September 12 and returned to jail under a death sentence.

Ned was enslaved by the estate of Charles Stuart. His case came before the Sussex County Court of Oyer and Terminer in September 1831. On September 12, he was brought to court in the county jailer’s custody and pleaded not guilty. William Parham testified that he had committed Ned to custody.

The court heard Lizzy’s account of threatening remarks attributed to Ned after news of the uprising. It also heard that Abram had not corroborated the alleged remarks. After convicting Ned, the court ordered him returned to jail for an execution scheduled for September 23. The records reviewed do not confirm the date of his death.
